Our 7th School Partnership: The Fashion Foundation Had a Blast With PSIS 155!

PTA President Rasheeda White!
The Fashion Foundation is proud to announce that we have completed our seventh school donation to PSIS 155 in Brooklyn, NY! Not only have we increased our school partnerships substantially to begin 2016, but this past donation marked $18,000+ worth of school supplies donated from our organization! This is an incredible feat as we continue to help more and more students in need.

Fashion Foundation founder, Amanda Munz, and host committee member Megan Melofchik spent the day with students at PSIS 155. The Foundation was able to donate an essential list of supplies for students, which included new uniforms, art supplies, notebooks and gym gear—basketballs, footballs and hula hoops!

Not only were our two important members of The Foundation front and center with the elementary students, but local Brooklyn charity “What About the Children” also graciously joined the fun and attended the day with Amanda and Megan. In addition, we were privileged with the opportunity to work with PTA president, Rasheeda White, who was a great help during all of the daytime festivities.

The Foundation hosted a painting party with the students, in which over 100 wooden picture frames were supplied for the children to present their projects in—a wonderful gift for the families during the Valentine’s Day season.

*****

What most people don’t realize is that of the 535 students that attend PSIS 155, about 200 live in shelters. That’s about 37 percent of the class population. It’s a harsh reality such as this one that motivates The Fashion Foundation to help in any way that it can.

But it starts with you, the people who volunteer to donate and support our mission. A year ago, The Foundation was working on securing its third school partnership. Now, we are working towards an eighth. This would not be possible without those of you who help The Foundation grow each and every day. We thank you.

Special thanks to Brooklyn Charity “What About Children” and PTA president, Rasheeda White, for all for all of your help, and for teaming up with us to provide the students of PSIS 155 a day that they well deserved.

Please do not forget to donate at our website: www.thefashionfoundation.org, like us on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/thefashionfoundation, and of course, like us on Twitter at the handle, @FashFoundation.

Till next time!

Interview with the Host Committee: Part 7

Hello, again!

First of all, let me quickly say that this past Saturday was our Fall into Fashion Fundraiser! With nearly 200 people in attendance, we had a fabulous time with music, dancing and raffles galore! Be sure to stay tuned for a post about the event!

Anyway, this week, I'd like to introduce you all to Alexis! A member of our host committee and the chief of selling tickets, Alexis draws on her fashion education and experience to help the Foundation achieve its every goal! Please keep reading to learn more about Alexis.

Can you please provide a brief description of yourself? (Hobbies, college(s) attended: major, minor, year graduated; what you’d like to do for your career). I graduated in 2014 from the Fashion Institute of Technology, where I majored in Fashion Merchandising Management with a specialization in buying and planning. I currently work at Calvin Klein as the Men's Apparel Merchandise Coordinator.
Do you volunteer with any other organizations? What are you passionate about? Currently I only volunteer with The Fashion Foundation. I have always been passionate about volunteering. All throughout high school I belonged to different clubs that revolved around helping others and benefiting the community.  I was even the president of the Red Cross Club.  One of my favorite quotes is "Helping people will not necessarily change the world, but it will change the world for them"
What is your daytime job and what is your position/title at The Fashion Foundation? I currently work at Calvin Klein as the Men's Apparel Merchandise Coordinator and I am on the Host Committee for the fashion foundation.
Can you give us a brief description of your job responsibilities at The Foundation? How long have you been volunteering with the Fashion Foundation? I have been volunteering with The Fashion Foundation for over a year now. My responsibilities include working with the host committee to plan events and raise awareness through social media and networking events to attract potential donors.
How did you become involved with The Foundation? How did you hear about the organization? I first learned about The Fashion Foundation through Facebook. I attended FIT with Amanda and I would see her post about the foundation. Once I saw her post that she needed members for the host committee I knew immediately I wanted to be involved.
Why did you choose The Foundation? In your opinion, what separates The Foundation from any other charitable nonprofit organization? I love the idea of using fashion as a means to create awareness and give back to students in need.
What’s your favorite part about being a volunteer? I love working with the host committee. They are all amazing people and truly make planning this event so much fun!
Do you have any plans for the upcoming Fall season (both for the Foundation and otherwise)? I celebrated my 23rd Birthday 2 days before our event.
Looking forward, what are some of the things you wish to do to help The Foundation achieve its goal of helping children in need? I hope to help our events grow and evolve into an amazing fundraiser that creates awareness and raises donations for students.
Lastly, can you give our readers a reason why participating and/or donating to The Foundation is worth their while? Supporting the education of our youth is so significant because they are the future. They will be our future leaders and I don't know about you, but I personally would like our future leaders to have the best education opportunities.
Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself? I'm obsessed with Starbucks coffee and my favorite color is pink. I also have a twin sister and I love fashion!

I'd personally like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Alexis and the entire crew for helping the Fashion Foundation be where it is today! Amanda, your passion and dedication is truly unmatched and admirable! Thank you for all that you guys do for children in need.

Moving on, today I have the pleasure of featuring Gina, a member of our awesome host committee! A dedicated and compassionate person, as well as an expert in public relations, Gina is truly an integral part of our team. Please continue to read her interview below to learn more!

Gina (left)

Can you please provide a brief description of yourself? (Hobbies, college(s) attended: major, minor, year graduated; what you’d like to do for your career). I graduated UMass Amherst in 2012 with a bachelors degree in Journalism and Communications. I am now a publicist at a leading public relations and brand building firm, Relevance New York in Manhattan. Some of my hobbies including exploring New York City with friends, seeing a Broadway show, trying a new restaurant, working out and volunteering for The Fashion Foundation.
Do you volunteer with any other organizations? What are you passionate about? I don't volunteer with any other organizations, but often donate to other charities that my family and friends are involved with. I am passionate about my job as a publicist, traveling, and volunteering for a good cause.
What is your daytime job and what is your position/title at The Fashion Foundation? My daytime job is a publicist at a leading public relations and brand building firm, Relevance New York in Manhattan. At The Fashion Foundation, I am a Fundraising Committee Member.
Can you give us a brief description of your job responsibilities at The Foundation? How long have you been volunteering with the Fashion Foundation? As a Fundraising Committee Member, I help with ticket sales, raffle donations and sponsorship for the upcoming fundraiser.
How did you become involved with The Foundation? How did you hear about the organization?  I met Amanda, the founder of The Fashion Foundation, at a Levo League networking event, where she shared her story about starting the foundation.
Why did you choose The Foundation? In your opinion, what separates The Foundation from any other charitable nonprofit organization?  Listening to Amanda's story, I became inspired and instantly knew that I wanted to be involved. I love fashion, wanted to be involved in the fashion industry in some way. I was also looking for an organization to volunteer for that could hopefully tie in my passion for fashion - and The Fashion Foundation was the answer! What I think separates The Foundation from other charitable organizations, is that it combines the two worlds - fashion to give back to education.
What’s your favorite part about being a volunteer?  My favorite part about being a volunteer is that I am working towards a cause that means a lot to my family and friends, because many of them are teachers. I love being able to make a difference in someone's life and help improve their education, and give them the tools to succeed.
What are some of the things you wish to accomplish personally through your involvement with The Foundation? I hope to help The Foundation raise money at its fundraiser, and continue to raise money through its online store. I want to work towards getting The Foundation more recognized on a global scale, to help spread its efforts and continue to help more schools in New York City. Hopefully, we will be able to help schools across the country.
Will you be attending the Fall into Fashion Fundraiser on September 26th at 7 p.m.? Why do you believe others should attend this event? I will definitely be attending the fundraiser! Not only is it a night of dancing, an open bar and great raffle prizes - it is all supporting an important cause. All of us have been affected by our education, so we can all relate.
Do you have any plans for the upcoming Fall season (both for the Foundation and otherwise)? This Fall I want to continue working with The Fashion Foundation to raise money to buy school supplies.
Looking forward, what are some of the things you wish to do to help The Foundation achieve its goal of helping children in need? I want to work towards making strategic and permanent partnerships with brands and stores to donate items to be sold on The Foundation's online store.
Lastly, can you give our readers a reason why participating and/or donating to The Foundation is worth their while? All of us have been affected by our education, so we can all easily relate. We remember our favorite class, our favorite teacher, our favorite subject. One of my favorite quotes is, "The direction in which education starts, a man will determine his future in life." - Plato
The tools The Foundation donates to schools, will hopefully be tools in inspiring a child's future goals and dreams.

  2. Do you volunteer with any other organizations? What are you passionate about? I am passionate about my family and helping anyone who could use a hand. School-related organizations hold a special place because everyone in my family is in education.
  3. What is your daytime job and what is your position/title at The Fashion Foundation? I am a business analyst at SinglePlatform and I am a board member (maybe)/committee member.
  4. Can you give us a brief description of your job responsibilities at The Foundation? How long have you been volunteering with the Fashion Foundation? This is my second year volunteering and I use my hospitality connections to get great raffles, and my professional network to secure donations.

  6. Why did you choose The Foundation? In your opinion, what separates The Foundation from any other charitable nonprofit organization? Amanda has drive and passion. I love the feel of a startup of any kind and Amanda's passion for this--both her love of clothing and love of giving back--is what keeps it special.
  7. What’s your favorite part about being a volunteer? Seeing what all of the hard work looks like at a fundraiser and seeing its benefits afterward.
  8. What are some of the things you wish to accomplish personally through your involvement with The Foundation? Bigger and better events yearly until they are the epitome of cool!
  9. Will you be attending the Fall into Fashion Fundraiser on September 26th at 7 p.m.? Why do you believe others should attend this event? I planned it, I breathe it, I love it. This is a perfect event to get your toes wet with nonprofit events.
  10. Do you have any plans for the upcoming fall season (both for the Foundation and otherwise)? Apple picking with the bae and family activities.
  11. Lastly, can you give our readers a reason why participating and/or donating to The Foundation is worth their while? Donating and giving back is something everyone should do, whether it be the smallest act or something as grand as could be. The Fashion Foundation takes clothes--something we all take for granted--and puts them to work for kids in need.
  12. Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself? I'm a blast in a glass and literally love making these events come to life.
Tommy presenting raffle prizes at last year's Fashion Foundation event in New York City!

An Interview with The Fashion Foundation's Vice President!

From left to right: The Fashion Foundation
Board VP Stephanie Cantelmo with CEO Amanda Munz.
Welcome back everyone to another special Fashion Foundation interview! As we wrap up this awesome series of conversations with the wonderful volunteers and committee members of The Foundation, we look ahead to the fall season that promises new opportunities for partnering schools and plenty of donation events (more updates to follow, so stay tuned).

Before we get into the good stuff for this week’s post, I'd like to give a special reminder that tomorrow—that’s right, TOMORROW, Saturday, September 26th's "Fall Into Fashion Fundraiser" at the TAJ Lounge in NYC is finally here!

If you haven't purchased a ticket yet then don’t sweat it, there’s still time! You can buy tickets by visiting our main website (www.thefashionfoundation.org) or click the link here. If you'd like to find out more information about the event then help yourself by clicking the link here.

Now, without further ado, I am proud to feature one of the most important members of The Fashion Foundation, and a person who is a tremendous asset to the organization. I owe her many thanks as it is she who is responsible for introducing me to The Foundation while also granting me the opportunity to write and edit for this wonderful non-profit.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome a dear friend of mine, Board Vice President, Ms. Stephanie Cantelmo.

Stephanie is a graduate of Queen’s College with her Bachelor’s Degree in graphic design; she also holds a Master’s Degree in communication arts through NYIT. She holds the prestigious title of Board Vice President for The Fashion Foundation, and she works side-by-side with our founder, Amanda, on a daily basis to make sure the organization runs smoothly.

From organizing events, attending school donations, writing press releases, designing logos and working directly with the host committee to oversee operations, Stephanie does it all and then some. The interview below will give everyone proper insight to what it’s like to be a key player for a successful startup. Enjoy!
__________________

Can you please provide a brief description of yourself? (Hobbies, college(s) attended: major, minor, year graduated; what you’d like to do for your career).

I’m in love with seeing and experiencing new things. My biggest passion/hobby is traveling. Whether it’s an hour drive away or an eight hour flight, I find joy in going places I’ve never been before and immersing myself in that area's way of life.

I attended Queens College for graphic design and then went back to school at NYIT to get my masters degree in communication arts. I currently work in graphic design, but I gained interest in public relations and event planning, so by getting my masters, I’m hoping that will help guide me towards a career in event planning.

What is your daytime job and what is your position/title at The Fashion Foundation?

I currently work as a graphic designer during the day and invest a large amount of my free time in working with The Foundation. For The Fashion Foundation, I am the Board Vice President. Basically, I help out with anything and everything that I can to make The Foundation run smoothly.

Stephanie organizing supplies during a school donation.
Can you tell our readers a little bit about how The Foundation got started, what sparked the idea behind its formation?

Amanda had this idea while she was interning for some of the top designers in New York City. She saw many samples being thrown away so she had the “ah-ha” moment of let's do something with all this waste in the industry. She figured if we can collect these samples and other unwanted clothing, it could be sold in order to benefit students in need.

So a couple of years ago while I was in college for graphic design, Amanda reached out to me asking me if I would be able to help her by creating a logo for a foundation she wanted to start. After hearing the concept, I was immediately drawn to the idea and wanted to be a part of it.

We got together and hashed out the look and feel she wanted The Fashion Foundation to have and hours later the logo that is still used today was created. Ever since the initial logo was created, we have been working together to bring her vision to life.

I don’t think most people realize how difficult it is to work for a start-up organization. What does a typical workday look like, on average, as The Fashion Foundation’s Vice-President?

After finishing eight hours at my day job, I work on Foundation stuff as needed. Since it is in start-up mode, every day is different for me. One day I can be designing invitations for an event, the next day I can be attending a school donation taking pictures and handing out school supplies. This is one of the things I love about being a part of it. I get to be involved in so many aspects that there’s never a dull day.

Gearing up for the very successful
Bloomingdale's event!
What has surprised you most about being a part of The Foundation? Have you learned things about yourself that you don’t think you could have elsewhere?

I’ve learned that it doesn’t take millions of dollars to make a difference. I’ve been able to see first hand how just $3,000 can change a whole school. Sure, a million dollars is great, don’t get me wrong, but with all these small donations we have been able to make so far, we have changed the lives of thousands of students and that’s a great start. We are only two years in, so I’m very excited to see where we will be in two more years and how many more students we can help.

In your opinion, what separates The Foundation from any other non-profit organization that is involved in similar work?

What I love about The Fashion Foundation is that Amanda will go to the school and meet with the principal and go over specifically what their students’ need. The Foundation does not just cut a check and move on to the next school. We get to personalize each donation that we do by ordering the specifics.

On top of that, we then get to go into the school and talk with the students and give out the supplies ourselves as well. I’ve volunteered for many organizations in the past, but I never had the opportunity to help on such a personal level like I do when I’m handing out school supplies to a student.

Can you name a moment during your involvement with The Foundation that was really special to you as a person? Whether it was your experience of being there for its creation, participating in an event, witnessing a donation, etc.

Honestly, there are so many moments that have been special that it’s hard to pick just one. A moment that really touched my heart was during a school donation. Amanda and I walked into the main office of a school we were donating to and a little girl overheard the reason why we were there and walked over to us and said, “what you’re doing for us is really nice, you’re really good people.” It was the sweetest thing I think we both ever heard and a moment we will never forget. That moment proved to us that we need to keep pushing and growing The Foundation so that we can positively impact more students.

Amanda and Stephanie before the start of The Foundation.
You are great friends with the founder, Amanda Munz, even long before The Foundation began. How has the positive chemistry between you and Amanda contributed to The Foundation’s current success?

Amanda and I have been friends since sixth grade and ever since then we’ve always been able to laugh and have a good time together. Having had a solid friendship before the start of The Foundation has definitely helped us in the way we work together.  We know we can count on each other to handle whatever is thrown at us and have a good time doing it.

Why should supporters attend the “Fall into Fashion Fundraiser” this weekend on September 26th @ 7pm?

There are so many reasons to come hang out with The Fashion Foundation this weekend. Not only will we be raising money for students, you’ll have a great time doing it. There’s going to be great music, wonderful people, amazing raffle prizes, delicious food and of course an open bar.

Here's to these two awesome ladies!
Lastly, can you give our readers a reason why participating and/or donating to The Foundation is worth their while?

Having been to all the school donations, I can vouch that The Fashion Foundation is a wonderful nonprofit to support. I’ve seen the smiles on children's faces when they received a box of pencils, and I’ve spoken to many students who have thanked The Foundation from the bottom of their hearts.

Many people might overlook school supplies, but the truth is, there are way too many students who show up to school without a pencil and notebook. One student said to me, “Thank you! Now I don’t have to use my lunch money.” School supplies should never be a worry for a child, so this is why we need to continue what we are doing.

I’d like to thank Stephanie and all of the generous volunteers and host committee members who have offered their time to do these interviews for The Fashion Foundation’s blog page. As a writer and huge supporter of everything The Foundation does, I can tell you that it is the people who support this organization, whether through donated time, money, clothing etc., that are the reason that The Foundation will continue to grow and achieve the very mission it sets forth: to continue to provide school supplies to the students who need it the most.

As always, don’t forget to follow The Fashion Foundation on Twitter, like us on Facebook, and of course, don't forget to donate to our website at www.thefashionfoundation.org. Till next time!

An Interview With the Host Committee: Part 3

Don't forget to purchase a ticket to this fall's event!
Greetings everyone! We welcome you yet again to another special Fashion Foundation host committee interview! It has been such a rewarding experience to get to conduct these interviews. It is truly remarkable to see the level of talent that exists in the people who are behind the scenes for The Fashion Foundation, and I am happy to say that for the next couple of posts, we'll be introducing you to more of the special pieces that make The Foundation whole.

But before we jump into today's piece...

I'd like to give a special reminder for this month: Saturday, September 26th's "Fall Into Fashion Fundraiser" at the TAJ Lounge in NYC is right around the corner! If you haven't purchased a ticket yet, you can buy them by visiting our main website (www.fashionfoundation.org) or click the link here. If you'd like to find out more information about the event then help yourself by clicking the link here.

And now, back to the fun stuff!

It's a pleasure to introduce another special member of the Host Committee, and my subject for today's interview post, Ms. Shannon Modri.

Shannon is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island where she majored in Accounting. Shannon works tirelessly to help sell tickets for Foundation events and collect donations. She is also active in attending networking gatherings while helping the Foundation establish its social media presence on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. She graciously agreed to answer the questions I created for her; I think you will agree, she provided some really awesome insight about what it's like to work for an up and coming non-profit organization. I hope you enjoy!

Can you please provide a brief description of yourself? (Hobbies, college(s) attended: major, minor, year graduated; what you’d like to do for your career).
I recently graduated from the University of Rhode Island in May 2015 where I majored in Accounting. I was in the sorority, Delta Zeta, and I was a part of their philanthropy committee. For my career, I always wanted to be involved with fashion.

What is your daytime job and what is your position/title at The Fashion Foundation?
I just accepted a Merchandise Coordinator position at Calvin Klein. For the Fashion Foundation, I am a member of the host committee.

How did you become involved with The Foundation? How did you hear about them?
The reason why I became involved with The Foundation is because of my friend Alexis who joined The Foundation last year. I worked with her at Calvin Klein and she mentioned she was working with a non-profit organization. Alexis explained to me that the Fashion Foundation works to help students in need to provide them with school supplies. I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to join and do something useful with my extra time.

Can you give us a brief description of your job responsibilities at The Foundation? What are some of the recent activities you have worked on for The FF?
My job for The Foundation is being a host committee member. Some of my job responsibilities are to sell tickets and receive donations for the Fall into Fashion Fundraiser that is on September 26th. I also attend networking events and post on social media to spread awareness for The Foundation.

From your experience, why is it so important for an organization like The Fashion Foundation to invest a lot of time in networking with other people and companies?
The Fashion Foundation is a start-up non profit organization. To make people and companies more aware of The Foundation, I network through events and social media to try to spread the word. Investing a lot of time in networking is important because the more connections you make, the better.

What are some of the things you do to establish a social network presence for The Foundation?
I post pictures of the invitations for The Fall into Fashion Fundraiser on Instagram. This will allow my followers to know when and where the event is. Also, it includes the link to buy tickets for the event. Also, it is important because people who do not follow me can also see my posts if one of our mutual followers “like” it. Also, I like photos and posts of other committee members on Facebook as well as the Fashion Foundation write-ups on their page.

As far as The Foundation is concerned, how are you preparing for the Fall Season? Is there anything exciting on the horizon for the Host Committee?
The Fall Season is very busy because we are preparing for our Fall into Fashion Fundraiser on September 26th. We are working on selling tickets for the event, getting donations for raffles and networking about the fundraiser, constantly. We are also brainstorming ideas for next year’s fundraiser!

What are some of the things you wish to accomplish personally through your involvement with The Foundation?
I want to make more of my friends, family and networking connections aware that the Fashion Foundation is a nonprofit organization that donates money to help students that cannot afford school supplies. This is a huge issue because I could not imagine not being able to afford necessities for school. I want to spread awareness as much as I can.

Our awesome flyer for this month's event!
Why should supporters attend the “Fall into Fashion Fundraiser” on September 26th @ 7pm?
Supporters should attend the Fall into Fashion Fundraiser because it is for a great cause. The event will help us accomplish our goal to help students who do not have the money to afford school supplies. It is rewarding to know that we are helping a child to a better education.

Lastly, can you give our readers a reason why participating and/or donating to The Foundation is worth their while.
Readers will have the opportunity to become a part of helping students in need. A little goes a long way; any donation helps! We want readers to participate and donate because it will supply students with the tools required to learn. School supplies are a basis of learning. Every child should have the opportunity to learn.

Once again, The Fashion Foundation would like to thank Shannon for this interview and for all that she does and will continue to do for The Foundation.
